The shape of the diamond you are choosing for your ring is based on your own personal preference. There is no one shape that will be better than the other. However, the most popular shape is the Round Brilliant when it comes to engagement rings as they offer the most brilliance. Other individuals may prefer something like a Cushion Cut diamonds or Oval Cut. If you arenât positive as to what shape your future partner prefers, you can always ask a close friend or family member.
Cut Grades
The biggest and most important aspect of the ringâs beauty is the quality of its cut. Not all vendors have the same cut grades, so i would recommend Ideal Cut and Excellent Cut diamonds.
Understanding Grades
You may hear retailers referring to the cut as Excellent, Very Good, Fair, and Poor. These terms do not mean the same thing for all retailers. A retailer will assign any grade they want to based on a specific set of factors they set in place. One retailer may grade a diamond as âSignature Idealâ, âExcellentâ, or âidealâ, whereas another may call all three types âIdealâ. Another retailer may grade all three of them as âExcellentâ, so it's important to take caution when looking at cut grades from each retailer. They are most likely going to be inconsistent.
Carat weight, clarity, and colour are a few Cut grades that were originated by GIA. GIA is the largest, oldest, and one of the most well-respected independent laboratories on Earth. They are the ones who issue grades for diamonds using a Grading Report or Dossier. As opposed to other laboratories, GIA is not partially owned by a diamond retailer or wholesaler. They are a non-profit organization and created the âfour Câsâ rating system that most retailers use today.
Inclusions
If I may say so, the main goal of the consumer should be to find the cheapest diamond ring you can find. This would be in regards to the clarity of the diamond and some other factors. There are plenty of cheap diamonds that are used for engagement rings. They may have some inclusions if you look at them under a microscope, magnifying glass, or loupe, but you wonât be able to see them with the naked eye.
Factors to Consider
Many individuals have a shape preference when receiving a ring as a gift or for an engagement. The purchaser should take into consideration how the quality of a cheap ring is affected. The person who is on the receiving end of the ring should determine the shape of it if itâs possible. This should definitely be considered in the shape of the diamond ring is really fancy.
My Advice
Here is what I think about cut grades. If you are looking for something that has a round brilliant diamond in it, only look at âIdealâ and âExcellentâ grade diamonds. If your partner is the type of person who wants a fancy diamond shape, then you may want to consider a âPremiumâ Cut and completely omit the other cut grades.
Additionally, take caution of retailers who use their own cut grades as opposed to what GIA has already assigned. Many websites and retail stores will choose to have their own Cut rating that may be more generous than what GIA has set in place.
